Snipers are frightening enemies in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare & Warzone. If you want to be one of the feared soldiers as a controller player, take a look at a technique here that makes all the difference.
If you want to be really good with the sniper rifle in Call of Duty, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel or have a PC mouse. There are a few techniques you can refer to. These include:
- Quick-Scoping
- Hard-Scoping
- Drag-Scoping
Exciting for controller players: Drag-Scoping. With this technique, you don’t rely on your precision with your right thumb, but rather your reaction with the trigger. This makes hitting much easier, and the longtime CoD sniper and streamer “IceManIsaac” even says: “It changed my life” – which he might very well mean seriously given his high playtime.

How does it work exactly? In simple terms, you increase your chances of hitting because you rely on a different mechanic.
With Drag-Scoping, you don’t even try to have the enemy directly in your crosshairs when aiming, but rather aim beside them and then move the crosshair over the enemy to pull the trigger at the right moment. The exact steps:
- This technique is aided by aim assist with the controller
- To benefit from the mechanic, aim with your large scope a good distance beside the enemy
- Then pull your crosshair towards the opponent
- Once the crosshair is on target, fire the bullet from the barrel
Why is this technique so good? With the controller, this is really strong in the current Call of Duty because the aim assist supports you. As soon as the crosshair gets too close to the opponent, CoD: MW 2019 reduces the sensitivity a bit, and it feels as if your scope is slower for a moment.
You can use this “reduction” to train your muscle memory. “IceManIsaac” believes that with enough practice, you almost automatically hit the right moment to fire, as you have the moment when the assist kicks in as a point of reference.
What settings should I use? The streamer recommends that you, as a sniper, should use relatively low sensitivity settings. Too high values jeopardize a secure shot, but you might be slightly faster with your hit. It depends on your preferences.
Here are the settings that “IceManIsaac” recommends:
- Stick sensitivity for both axes: 6
- ADS sensitivity multiplier: 0.85
- Set the deadzone correctly
- Aim assist: Standard
- Target reaction curve: Standard
- Aim assist scaling with field of view: Enabled (PC only)
Additionally, we encourage you to make other settings that improve your view and free you from annoying filters. It’s also important to be aware of the details of aim assist. “IceManIsaac” uses the “Standard Assist” due to his habits. However, for snipers, switching to “Precision” or “Focused” is worthwhile, as the “Inertia Effect” is even stronger.
Stay in Motion and Refine Your Technique
What else is there to know about Drag-Scoping? With this technique, the focus shifts from precise aiming to proper timing. Yet both are important to be really good.
If you practice Drag-Scoping, your goal should be to achieve headshots with this technique. Especially in battle royale Warzone, headshots with sniper rifles are important, as this is the only way to knock out your enemies with a single hit. In regular multiplayer, a single bullet to the chest is enough with the large sniper rifles.
The “dragging” over the opponent doesn’t always have to be horizontal. However, to trigger the “trigger moment” of aim assist, there always needs to be a little space between the crosshair and the defenseless enemy.
Stay in motion while “scoping” to be a more difficult target. Move without a system from left to right, duck, jump, move out of sight, run a bit, and aim again at the opponent. All this helps you to stay in motion, but it also helps you take fewer hits. Especially “jumping” and “ducking” are important to keep your head at a different height.

Why should I use this technique? As a controller player, you should get used to “Drag Scoping” with snipers, as it offers significant advantages over directly aiming at the enemy.
Just like with “Slide-Cancel”, your muscle memory will gradually imprint the shooting sequence. As soon as aim assist triggers, your brain knows that it’s time to shoot at any moment. The more often you do it, the better your timing will become.
Try it out, and you will be surprised at how easily enemies can be hit even without much practice.
