The latest dungeon in World of Warcraft needs adjustment even before launch. The reason for this is the slowest class in the game.
To master WoW, one needs a good understanding of the game. This also includes using the right abilities at the right moment to escape danger zones. However, this is sometimes not so easy. Especially when a mechanic is so powerful that a class cannot win at all – this was exactly the case with a boss in the upcoming Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek.
What is the problem? The second boss in the Altar of Wrath, “The Writhing Coil,” has a mechanic called “Vine Grip.” This is a very typical ability for many bosses. Characters are pulled in and connected to the boss by a vine. The vine exerts a constant pull until one manages to break the connection by moving far enough away.
This is the perfect moment to use movement abilities. A mage’s blink, a rogue’s sprint, or a warrior’s jump – this immediately ends the mechanic and brings the character to safety.
However, there is one class that could not escape. It was simply impossible.
Priests need help, can’t get away
Which class needs help? We are talking about the priest – in all its forms, meaning Holy, Discipline, and Shadow. Whether one tries with angel feathers, takes the speed buff during dispersion, or enhances speed with the “Body and Soul” talent – it simply wasn’t enough. For priests, without external help, such as the rescue from a summoner or a warlock portal, it was simply impossible to escape this ability.
Consequently, there was also a lot of fuss about this in the game’s subreddit and collective mocking:
The post received so many views that Blizzard made an adjustment in the next updates of the PTR for Patch 12.1 Curse of Ula’tek: The strength of the retreating vine will be reduced by 50%.
Cortyn says: As a long-time priest, I am well aware of this problem from raids. Whenever there are “run mechanics,” I essentially have to anticipate when it starts and begin a bit earlier than everyone else. While the priest theoretically has many speed buffs, they are not stackable, their effect is very minor, and lasts only a few seconds.
That a boss appeared on the PTR that was completely impossible for priests could perhaps also be a hint for Blizzard to grant this class a movement ability that actually deserves the name. It would also have the nice effect that I wouldn’t always have to hear in the raid whether “someone can push Cortyn” or receive wise advice like: “Did you know that priests are the only class in the game that get faster when they turn on RP-Walk”?
So far, I tolerate this – but only because our raid leader really had the brilliant idea of assigning the key combination “Alt+F4” to abilities…
