After Microsoft laid off a large part of the team from ESO, the future of the MMORPG was uncertain. Now, Game Director Nick Giacomini has released a revised roadmap for 2026.
Nick Giacomini presented a revised roadmap in a blog post on July 30, 2026, and discussed the future of the MMORPG. Some planned features have been postponed to 2027. The changes are a result of the recent layoffs at Xbox, which had a particularly harsh impact on ESO.
Despite delays, many new contents are expected in 2026
This is the new roadmap: In total, 3 major features have been postponed. The Game Director explains that the previously announced deadlines cannot be met with the usual quality after the studio’s restructuring. The affected items are:
- The 12-player trial “Crimson Steppe”, originally planned for late summer. This presents a special challenge for developers with mounted combat.
- Update 52 will no longer come in the fall/winter period of 2026, but is planned for January 2027. It is supposed to include the PvP zone “Jerall Pass” as well as the dynamic events in Skyrim, also known as Tamriel.
- The next Class-&-Combat refresh is now also expected to arrive only in 2027. However, the developers are currently discussing interim solutions for classes that have not yet received a refresh.

These contents are still coming in 2026
Despite the changes, Season 2 is expected to start in 2026, and the ongoing Season 1 will be supplemented with additional content.
Season 1: The update 51 is delayed by a week and will start on September 28. It includes:
- The new challenge: Vault of the Scholars
- A new game system: Rumors
- Improvements to the player experience, including: pinning achievements, customizable HUD, improvements to antiquities, transmutation stations in Cyrodiil, and various QoL improvements
The rest of Season 1 is expected to proceed as planned.
- A new story quest is now live
- The event “Whitestrake’s Mayhem” will take place from August 5 to August 12
- From August 20 to September 17, there will be a new golden endeavor campaign called “Straight to the Crate”, where you can earn up to 20 free crown crates.
- From September 30 to October 14, the new event “Battles of Tamriel’s High Seas” will take place
- The three-sided battlegrounds will return permanently with the update on September 28
Season 2: Starts on October 21 and includes:
- The solo dungeons “Moonhunter Keep” and “March of Sacrifice”
- To celebrate the launch of these solo dungeons, the group version will be free for all on October 12, 2026
- The DLCs Greymoor and Markarth will be integrated into the base game for all players for free on November 9
- From November 9 to December 2, there will be a new golden endeavor to highlight Skyrim and the now universally available antiquities system
- Improvements to the Tamriel Tomes, including expanded challenges for different playstyles
- Rewards from the Frostatron Archmage Crate will be available at the Gold Coast Bazaar
- The events Witch Festival and Festival of Rejuvenation will return as usual

In conclusion, the Game Director makes it clear: They do not want to merely keep the MMORPG running despite the obstacles, but to foster its growth. Therefore, the simple principle for the future is: They want to continue to provide entertaining and rewarding experiences within the seasonal model and find ways to enhance Tamriel for everyone.
Our MMORPG expert Karsten had already predicted in mid-July that the planned Skyrim content for 2026 might not be released or only in a reduced form. You can read his assessment here: Elder Scrolls Online had passionate heads with whom one could traverse the dungeons; they are all gone now
