The largest share comes from Helldivers II (12.7 million games), followed by Horizon Zero Dawn (4.5 million copies) and God of War (4.2 million).
And what is the problem now? At first glance, this seems to be a huge success. However, the problem is that many players mean more to Sony than just sold games. They are part of the PlayStation brand. In the past, games like Ghost of Tsushima or The Last of Us were clearly linked and attributed to the PlayStation console. Today, you can also play the titles on PC, which dilutes brand affiliation.
Additionally, these games can generate fresh subscribers for PS Plus on the console and can motivate people to switch to Sony’s ecosystem. Because here, you can finally play the exclusive games. Especially with the currently declining sales figures of the consoles, this is important. With this shift to exclusivity, one can strengthen their own console again.
The huge success of Sony on Steam may therefore have been a warning signal that many people bought the games but do not switch to the PS5. There, Sony can earn significantly more money with its own console, subscription models, and its own store with better margins.
