With Lord of Hatred, the Warlock came to Diablo 4 as a new class. While many players suspected beforehand that he would be completely OP, many now prefer to return to their old classes.
How strong is the Warlock? New classes in Diablo 4 are often much stronger than all others at release. The Spiritborn from Vessel of Hatred shot straight to the top of the meta and had to be nerfed. The Paladin also dominated the tier lists after his release.
The situation is different for the Warlock. In the tier lists for Season 13, he ranks high but shares his spot with other classes. Therefore, players who do not own the expansion will easily find equally strong alternatives and even stronger ones.
“Unfortunately, the Warlock came balanced into the game”
What do players think of the Warlock? Currently, the community is discussing the new class in various threads on Reddit. Players praise the extraordinary appearance of the Warlock and the creative skills, but they also express criticism:
- Even the best Warlock builds cannot compete with Whirlwind Barbarians or a Ball Lightning Sorceress.
- The visual effects of the Warlock skills overlay the entire event, making it hard to recognize AoE attacks from opponents.
- The gameplay is described as “clunky” and too slow for speed farming.
- Many complain that too many buttons need to be pressed for mediocre damage and buffs have to be monitored.
- To execute attacks, one must stand still, which further restricts mobility.
The overloaded visual effects annoy not only many Warlock players themselves but also their teammates, as a meme on Reddit illustrates:
Many therefore find that the Warlock falls short compared to the established classes. The Barbarian plays more casually, while the Sorceress flows much smoother thanks to her teleportation.
For example, andrejoss writes on Reddit that returning to the Barbarian was like a redemption. You swirl everything away and see what happens on screen without having to constantly stop to cast skills. In the end, his experience with the Warlock only solidified his love for the Barbarian.
Another player opted against the Warlock and chose the Paladin instead. By chance, he stumbled upon a playstyle in Diablo 4 where he simply lets himself be beaten, thus defeating monsters and having a lot of fun.
