With Lord of Hatred, the Warlock came as a new class to Diablo 4. While many players speculated beforehand that he would be completely OP, many now prefer to return to their old classes.
How strong is the Warlock? New classes in Diablo 4 are often much stronger than all others at launch. The Spiritborn from Vessel of Hatred shot straight to the top of the meta and had to be nerfed. The Paladin also dominated the tier lists after his release.
With the Warlock, it’s different. In the tier lists for Season 13, he stands quite high, but shares his spot with other classes. So if you don’t own the expansion, you can easily find equal or even stronger alternatives.
“Unfortunately, the Warlock came into the game balanced”
What do players think of the Warlock? In various threads on Reddit, the community is currently discussing the new class. Players praise the extraordinary appearance of the Warlock and the creative skills, but also express criticism:
- Even the best Warlock builds can’t compete with Whirlwind Barbarians or a Ball Lightning Sorceress.
- The visual effects of the Warlock skills overshadow the entire gameplay, making it hard to recognize the AoE attacks of the enemies.
- The gameplay feels “clunky” and too slow for speed farming.
- Many complain that too many buttons need to be pressed for mediocre damage and that buffs need to be monitored.
- To perform attacks, one has to stand still, further limiting mobility.
The overwhelming visual effects annoy not only many Warlocks themselves but also their teammates, as a meme on Reddit illustrates:
Many therefore feel that the Warlock falls short against the tried and true classes. The Barbarian plays more smoothly, and the Sorceress feels much more fluid thanks to her teleportation.
As andrejoss writes, for example, on Reddit, that returning to the Barbarian was like a redemption. You can whirl everything away and see what’s happening on the screen without constantly having to stop to cast skills. In the end, the experience with the Warlock only deepened his love for the Barbarian.
Another player has decided against the Warlock and has instead chosen the Paladin. He coincidentally stumbled upon a playstyle in Diablo 4 where he just lets himself get beaten, taking out monsters and still having a lot of fun.
