There were apparently internal plans at Bungie to save Destiny 2. However, they decided against it due to fears of high costs.
Destiny 2 is over. Or at least has arrived at the end. Because more than one major, final update will no longer be released, after which the game will be put into maintenance mode.
But some are wondering if the popular shooter could have been saved. And indeed, there were apparently internal plans to bring a kind of “Destiny Infinity”. In the end, however, they chose to disregard it.
Plans to save Destiny 2 are rejected due to excessive costs
Where does the information come from? According to well-informed journalist Paul Tassi from Forbes, unnamed sources at Bungie claim that after the disastrous expansion “Edge of Fate” a gentle reboot of D2 was considered.
Edge of Fate was released on July 5, 2025, and is now regarded as the arguably most controversial expansion among players: An inflated currency system, tedious grind, and controversial game mechanics discouraged many players. This was seen as a warning shot by both players and, presumably, developers. On Reddit, they are still discussing the weak expansion, which shows how controversial many decisions had been.
At Bungie, the weak expansion also led to a reconsideration of the Destiny 2 model and a desire to return to the old principle: Only one expansion per year. It is said that according to Forbes.com:
One idea was to abandon the two-expansions model and return to one major expansion, as well as rename the game to ‘Destiny Infinity’. The goal was to create a kind of relaunch, instead of developing a true Destiny 3, to generate new momentum.
But in the end, they decided against it, as a reboot or even a proper sequel was all considered too costly.
It is also important to know that the success or failure of “Marathon” was not the decisive point, but at least was a factor. Because Marathon would have meant fewer resources available for Destiny 2.
The Destiny community wants to prevent the end of the successful loot shooter franchise and has started a petition to persuade Sony and Bungie to develop Destiny 3 instead of completely giving up the series. The petition collected a significant number of digital signatures in a short time.
