During the ESO Tavern 2026, the developers of Elder Scrolls Online talked about the new team size. The comparison they draw is hopeful.
What is this comparison about? On X, the team from “The Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages” explains that during the ESO Tavern 2026, they were able to talk with Jessica Folsom (Associate Director of Community Management) and Jason Barnes (Associate Design Director) about the recent layoffs at ZeniMax.
According to the two studio employees, everyone is understandably affected by the recent events. However, the massive layoffs do not mean that there will be no new content for the MMORPG after Season 1. The team is as large after the layoffs as it was during the era of Wrothgar (the DLC from 2015 was called Orsinium) and Summerset – the chapter released in May 2018.
ZeniMax initiated the content roadmap with annual chapters between these two milestones, with Morrowind in June 2017 as the first major expansion.
“The time from Wrothgar to Summerset was the best phase”
How does the community react to this statement? Some comments reflect the hope that Elder Scrolls Online could still accompany us for a long time. Orsinium is considered one of the best story DLCs for the MMORPG, and particularly the first chapters Morrowind and Summerset are still very popular among many fans.
- DRob’s Daddy comments on X: “Well, those were the best DLCs …”
- Christian adds on X: “I still feel sorry for everyone who was laid off, especially for some specific faces we’ve known since day one. However, this is definitely something reassuring. I absolutely loved Summerset.”
- States agrees on X: “I loved ESO the most during the time before Elsweyr.”
- Plebbit user writes on Reddit: “The time from Wrothgar to Summerset was probably the best phase in the game’s history. I’m not optimistic, but I hope that everything turns out well, as the class overhaul and difficulty were great.”
Some other players admit that such statements should currently be taken with caution. For example, similar statements have been heard from id Software. There, too, there were extensive layoffs.
- Ponvyr writes on X: “That’s funny because id Software released a similar statement saying the company is still just as large as it was when Doom was released in 2016.”
- itsPlayboy warns on Reddit: “This is unfortunately literally just an attempt on their part to put themselves in a good light. They can claim just about anything to appear favorable. It would be a shame if they admitted to being in maintenance mode and then people wouldn’t want to spend money on their game anymore.”
What do you think: Do you have hope that ESO will continue to provide fun content for a long time? Or are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the MMORPG? Feel free to let us know in the comments!
Is it worth checking out ESO right now? At least Season 1 has just recently started anew, featuring the comeback of the Thieves Guild, new content systems, and a roadmap that extends into September. So, there’s still content coming in the coming months. You can find more information about it here: The future of the MMORPG to Elder Scrolls is uncertain, but now you can play what might be the last major content update
