For Call of Duty: Modern Warfare a new game is supposedly being released tomorrow: the battle royale mode Warzone. As a YouTuber just revealed, the free-to-play game has found a good solution for the respawn problem seen in other games like Fortnite or Apex Legends: the prison Gulag.
This is a problem with battle royale games: The currently popular battle royale games like Fortnite or Apex Legends have a problem: Those who play in a team and die will be bored for the next few minutes. Because they have no way to intervene in the game.
It is possible for team members to revive them, but the dead player is doomed to inactivity during that time. This is not a cool gaming experience if you die early and the match continues for a while.
How does it work in Warzone? According to a gameplay video that was released too early, dead players in Call of Duty: Warzone have two options to return to the game:
- one is a respawn system like in other games – squad members must collect money to buy a respawn item
- on the other hand, there is the Gulag, a prison where fallen players end up
Whoever wins a 1vs1 comes back
This is how the Gulag works: The Gulag is a separate area of the map. Players who die for the first time wake up there. Guards put them in their dismal cell. The Gulag is divided into two areas:
- One is “the shower room”, where two players fight against each other in a 1vs1
- the spectator stands, where other players can throw stones at the fighters to intervene in the fight and incapacitate one of the fighters when a team member is fighting
According to the YouTuber, there are different versions of the Gulag in CoD: Warzone.
Whoever wins the 1vs1 in the Gulag comes back on the map. However, the Gulag only works up to a certain point in the match, then this mechanic is no longer available, says the YouTuber. Once someone escapes the Gulag, they have no chance to use this second chance again in the match.
A round indicator lets the player know when it is their turn.
This is what makes the Gulag so good: This mechanic solves a central problem of squad fights in battle royale games: the “dead time” that eliminated players spend until they can do something again.
Warzone is supposedly set to start with 150 people and trio teams. The Gulag could be the decisive point in how CoD: Warzone distinguishes itself from other battle royale games.
