A new sci-fi shooter on Steam looks like a replica of Destiny and is being very well received by early players.
What game is it? Luna Abyss is a new shooter that was released on Steam on May 21 after 7 years of development and currently holds 86% positive ratings with 340 reviews on Valve’s gaming platform.
Kwalee Labs, the game’s developer studio, describes the shooter as “a story-based single-player action-adventure with jump-and-run elements and intense battles.” Gameplay-wise, it features a mix of bullet-hell and platforming.
The design of the game world strongly resembles Destiny, and this is no coincidence. As the developers recently revealed in an interview with gamesradar, both Destiny and Halo, Metroid Prime, various bullet-hell shooters, and even Nier: Automata were sources of inspiration.
Destiny’s platforming meets Returnal’s bullet-hell
What is Luna Abyss about? You take on the role of Flawkes, who is trapped on the artificial moon “Abyss” and must explore an abandoned mega-structure beneath the surface to retrieve a forgotten technology and find a lost colony.
While the game visually resembles Destiny, it also incorporates elements from Doom and Returnal in its gameplay. During a battle, you are trapped in small, enclosed arenas, having to dodge countless glowing projectiles from various enemies and send them to the afterlife with firearms – typical bullet-hell gameplay. Sometimes, however, these enemies have shields that you must destroy with special weaponry.
Between battles, you navigate through massive, mysterious structures of an alien civilization, hopping from platform to platform or balancing along narrow paths. Once again, the inspiration from Destiny is evident.
This is how Luna Abyss is currently received: Luna Abyss is getting off to a good start shortly after release, even though the shooter hasn’t attracted many players yet. Currently, 87% of a total of 340 reviews on Steam are positive (as of May 27, 2026, 12:00 PM). Players praise especially the story, the design of the game world, and its atmosphere. However, the combat and platforming are also well received. The few negative reviews criticize the gameplay itself. Additionally, some find the price of €29.99 for 5-8 hours of gameplay rather steep.
This is what MeinMMO editor Dariusz says about Luna Abyss: I haven’t been able to check out the full release version yet, but some time ago, I got a small first impression from two different demos. The game seemed solid and quite convincing.
It’s important to note that Luna Abyss is not a loot shooter and therefore does not want to be a Destiny clone. Destiny is present in the design of the game world, the platforming elements, and the atmosphere on the mysterious moon. In combat, Luna Abyss plays more like a more beginner-friendly first-person version of Returnal – and I like that. The demo was definitely fun for me, although the game occasionally lagged a bit at that time.

If you are looking for a new game after the death of Destiny 2, Luna Abyss might entertain you for a few hours. Alternatively, you might want to take a look at Witchfire. I introduced it in January as a PvE alternative to ARC Raiders, but especially the gunplay is comparable to Destiny in a dark fantasy setting. If you’re curious, you can find my preview report here: A shooter on Steam is perfect for players who don’t want PvP in ARC Raiders
