The first players have found the secret Cow Level in Diablo 4 – or at least what can be called that for now. MeinMMO explains step by step how to reach the secret level yourself.
Since the release of Lord of Hatred the Cow Level in Diablo 4 has been available, or rather a Cow Island, which is linked to the success: “There is no Cow Level”.
By now we also know, that you can only open the Cow Level on a Tuesday – at least that’s the current state. However, you can (and should) do the prep work beforehand.
Requirements: To open the level, you need to grind for several hours. You also need access to Lord of Hatred and Vessel of Hatred (included in Lord of Hatred), as you need to farm some of the necessary items in Nahantu. Additionally, you will need:
You can then open the level on both the seasonal and eternal realm and on any difficulty. What you need and how to reach the level step by step is explained in the guide and we also provide a “quick start” that saves grinding.
Tip: You can be invited by players who have already opened the Cow Level if you do not want to unlock it yourself.
Cow Level in Diablo 4 – Necessary Items and Rewards
To enter the Cow Level, you need to combine three items in the Horadrim Cube:
- the Stamina Potion
- the Rusty Bardiche
- and Neyrelle’s Hand
You could farm the potion and the bardiche already in Diablo 4 or Vessel of Hatred, and both items are tradeable. So if you’ve looked for the level earlier, you might already have both in the chest on the eternal realm.
Alternatively, you can have the potion and the weapon given to you by other players if you do not want to farm yourself and know someone who will lend them to you. In that case, continue directly with step 3 of the guide. Otherwise, you will find the farming instructions below.
Note: The guide is illustrated as much as possible by us, but we have not yet entered the Cow Level ourselves. We rely on information and images from the “Not finding a Cow Level” Discord (via Reddit), the guide from wowhead as well as the videos by Sliver of time (Part 1 on YouTube and Part 2 on YouTube).
Cow Level Guide Step by Step – Step 1: Farm the Stamina Potion
For the first item in the list, you should plan for the longest farming time right away, as you need to kill hundreds of cows to obtain the Stamina Potion. You need to follow several steps in sequence. First, you will need three quest items. You will receive one such item guaranteed after killing 666 cows – depending on the area where you are for the last kill:
- the Bloody Wood Splinter in Kehjistan or Hawezar
- the Moldy Folio in the Shattered Peaks or Scosglen
- and the Complex Metallic Fragment in the Dry Steppes
The first item is guaranteed after 666 kills; thereafter, each cow has a chance to drop another quest item. However, the YouTuber Sliver of time recommends making use of the guaranteed drop. Farm with three separate characters and make the last kill in the respective area for the corresponding item.
Sliver of time recommends a farming route in the Dry Steppes, west-southwest of Farobru. Kill about 500 cows here before heading to another area to farm the last kills there. Each round on this route includes about 5 cows, Sliver of time uses a simple counter tool online to know when to switch. Sliver of time explains the farming route in the embedded video starting around minute 4:02:
Once you have collected the items, you need to bring them to the Oxen Fountain in Ked Bardu. There, one of the statues is clickable. Stand in the middle in the water and drop the three quest items into the water. The other statues should then briefly light up accordingly. Interact with them, and you will receive the Strange Key.
With the key, you travel east of Scosglen, where the map looks like a cow skull:

At that point, you will find a door that is usually locked. Interact with it; the key will be consumed, and you can enter the Abandoned Hut.
In this cellar, there are several cows that follow you with their gaze, and numerous corpses of villagers. Kill the cows and you will receive the Stamina Potion.
