In Dungeons & Dragons cooperation and groups are often in focus. With the new rulebooks, a powerful game mechanic returns, but this time everyone benefits.
What kind of mechanic is this? With the rules of the expansion book “Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn,” the game mechanic of Circle Magic returns, although it is significantly different from how it was in Edition 3.5. Back then, a wizard could enhance a spell from others by also investing magical power.
However, this game mechanic was tied to certain factions and prestige classes and could only be used under very specific circumstances, such as by the wizards of Thay or the witches of Rashemen.
With the two expansion books “Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn” and “Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn,” which celebrate their release in German on August 4, 2026, this mechanic returns with new, suitable spells in tow. However, it is significantly revised, as now all spellcasters benefit from it.
Together to truly powerful spells
How does Circle Magic work in the new books? With the new Circle Magic, all characters capable of casting spells can enhance their magic with the help of other players or NPCs and collaborate as a group. For this, you need a primary spellcaster who casts the desired spell, and any number of secondary spellcasters who enhance the desired effect.
You can perform Circle Magic with any spell. If the spell fails because it is countered or one of the participants loses concentration, you retain your spell slot. This way, you can save components, share concentration, increase ranges, and more.

MyMMO editor and D&D expert Alex is already celebrating the return: In the English-speaking world, the new old mechanic has been around since November 2025. Now it is also coming to the German-speaking area. In our long-term campaign, we have been using Circle Magic for some time and have already celebrated several fresh and epic strategic moments.
The Circle Magic offers a different kind of teamwork, and since even paladins or fighters with magical hits are not excluded, everyone can benefit and fundamentally participate. Aside from the applications in combat – an enhanced fireball is basically the dream of every wizard – there have already been clever moments in role-playing that have immensely strengthened the group feeling narratively.
Although Circle Magic requires more communication, especially when trying to use it in battles. However, in our experience, this has brought the entire group together even more and led to even more creative solutions. The new old mechanic is thus perfect for groups that love creative approaches and massive spells.
However, some players also love to vehemently test their own limits and those of their game masters. Of course, Circle Magic has not escaped this, and you probably suspect it – players have also found a way to unleash a true atomic bomb here: “Is this even legal?” – A new form of magic in Dungeons & Dragons causes such high damage that even DMs could be brought to their knees
