To ensure you encounter this situation less frequently, you can increase the maximum capacity for the bag and the box. For this, you need PokéCoins. A trainer on Reddit impressively proves that you don’t necessarily have to spend real money for this.

What did the trainer do? As the trainer shows in his post on Reddit, he has increased both the item bag and the Pokémon box to maximum capacity. If you spend a decent amount of money, you can accomplish this in no time.
The special feature: the trainer used only PokéCoins that he acquired in the game. Not a single PokéCoin was purchased with real money. Since you can only receive a maximum of 50 coins per day through gyms and an upgrade costs 200 coins, you need a significant amount of time for this.
How did he do it? As the trainer shares in the comments, he saved between 10,000 – 15,000 coins from the old coin system, where up to 100 coins were possible per day. He then paused the game for an extended period.
Since 2022, he has been back and submitted a PokéStop near him. This turned into a gym, where he can collect the 50 coins every day without much hassle.
However, the most important factors for this achievement are time and endurance. The current limit for the item bag is 10,500, while the limit for the Pokémon box is even 11,500. Since an upgrade increases the capacity by 50 each and typically costs 200 PokéCoins, a lot of coins and a considerable amount of time are necessary to reach maximum capacities, especially if one relies solely on the free in-game coins.
