Setting: SciFi | Developer: Broadsword | Platform: PC | Release Date: December 20, 2011 | Model: Free2Play | Steam Rating: 89% Positive
What kind of game is this? SWTOR is a heavily story-focused MMORPG set in the well-known and beloved Star Wars universe. It places a strong emphasis on the narrative and requires moral decisions that can draw players towards the light or dark side of the Force. The dialogues are fully voiced.
The game uses classic tab-targeting but aims to implement it in a more modern and dynamic way. Besides the story, the MMORPG also boasts a good companion system, exciting endgame raids, and PvP content.
For Star Wars: The Old Republic an update released on December 10, 2024, is one of the largest updates in recent years. The game now has improved graphics and the names of inactive characters have been removed. Additionally, the offerings for the Free2Play version of the MMORPG have been expanded in the past year.
Plans for the near future include a major update, which is set to introduce difficulty levels in the open world.
What content does it offer? The MMORPG was released in 2011 and has been continuously expanded since then. Anyone starting with SWTOR now will have hundreds of hours of content ahead of them.
You can expect:
- 8 classes, 4 belonging to the Republic and 4 to the Empire
- Various races, though some can only be used with a premium account or must be purchased separately
- A wide range of story and quest offerings
- Dungeons and raids in the endgame
- A housing system where you can decorate yourself
- Fun PvP content like Huttball
What do the reviews on Steam say? SWTOR was released on Steam in July 2020 and was well received immediately. It currently has 75,379 reviews, with 89 percent being positive. In the last 30 days, the MMORPG was rated 497 times, with 86 percent being positive.
How many players does it have on Steam? In the past 30 days, an average of 3,753 players were online. The peak during this time was 6,667 concurrent players. The all-time high stands at 27,416 concurrent players. Since SWTOR also has its own launcher, this is likely just the tip of the iceberg.
Due to the recent drop in player numbers, it has actually fallen from our List of MMORPGs on Steam with the most active players.
Who is the MMORPG worth it for? SWTOR appeals to Star Wars fans and generally to theme park and story players. The focus is on the story, into which one can dive deeply without paying. This makes SWTOR a good single-player MMO. Further reading: 3 MMORPGs you definitely overlooked in 2024, and now is the right time to get started. SWTOR is also included.
