Rank 5 – Project Gorgon
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: Elder Game LCC | Platform: PC | Release Date: March 13, 2018 – Still in Early Access | Model: Buy2Play | Rating on Steam: 82 % Positive
What kind of game is this? Project Gorgon is an indie MMORPG that wants to take you back to the times of EverQuest 1 and Asheron’s Call. There are no predefined classes, and the combat system relies on classic tab-targeting.
Moreover, the MMORPG places great importance on exploring the world and discovering things for yourself. Project Gorgon launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2015 and was officially released after a long early access phase on January 29, 2026. If you want to get a first impression of the old-school experience, you can download a demo.
What content does it offer?
- Various PvE content such as quests and boss monsters
- Housing
- Open trading with your own market stall
- NPCs should recognize you and you can make them your friend or foe
- A big focus on exploring and getting to know the world and its rules
- You can even leave your footprint in the world: Write a letter or a book to make a name for yourself as a poet or author
What do the reviews on Steam say? Already in the early access phase, Project Gorgon was something of a critic’s darling and celebrated strong 86 percent positive reviews for a long time. After the official release in January, it seemed like the final version would also be well received by players. However, in recent weeks, the reviews have noticeably turned more negative – in the last 30 days they stand at only 46 percent.
This has caused the overall rating to drop from 86 percent positive to currently 82 percent, with 4,454 reviews. One reason for this might be the frustration in the community regarding a member of the Project Gorgon team, who allegedly abused his power and imposed unjustified bans. Although this employee was moved to a different area due to the criticism (via Reddit), this beef has left its mark.
How many players does it have on Steam? In the last 30 days, an average of about 1,036 players played Project Gorgon, with a peak of 1,985 simultaneously online. That is a huge drop compared to the release month, when there were sometimes more than 4,000 interested players on the servers: New MMORPG on Steam reaches record number of players: “I paid for it with my refund from Ashes of Creation”
For whom is the MMORPG worthwhile? If you would like to experience gameplay reminiscent of the times of EverQuest 1, or just want to see how an MMORPG plays that relies on the classical virtues of the 1990s, then you should take a look. However, the graphics are not particularly modern. In January 2025, there was a sad loss within the team.
