If you search for the tag “MMORPG” on Steam, hundreds of games are available. But which are the best according to the reviews? We look at the ten online role-playing games on Steam with the best ratings.
What is this article about? We from MeinMMO have looked at the MMORPGs on Steam and checked which have the best ratings. It was important to us that
- it is truly an MMORPG (the tags are set by players and not the developers)
- the game title is still being actively updated and is not already in “maintenance mode”
- the games have received at least 1,000 ratings to achieve comparability
The result is ten games, among which there are some surprises. For the listed player numbers, the data from the website steamcharts.com was used.
The article was originally created by Alexander Leitsch, who has played many of these titles himself and has engaged intensively with them. Since March 2024, MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz has taken over the updating of the list.
Rank 10 – Lord of the Rings Online
Setting: Fantasy, Middle-earth | Developer: Standing Stone Game | Platform: PC | Release Date: April 24, 2007 | Model: Free2Play | Rating on Steam: 81 % Positive
What kind of game is this? In Lord of the Rings Online (or LOTRO) you travel to Middle-earth, where you slowly but surely step out of calm starting zones into the world that is threatened by Sauron’s grip.
The MMORPG is characterized by a wonderful atmosphere, many contents, and regular new updates, although the game is already 17 years old. The game now goes beyond Tolkien’s novels and tells its own stories even without the ring.
Last year, the MMORPG was able to celebrate a kind of third spring through the premiere of more modern servers and the free provision of many contents. This was recently enhanced by a modernized user interface.
What do the Steam reviews say? Overall, the Middle-earth MMORPG has 22,946 ratings, with 81 percent of them being positive. In the last 30 days, the ratings look slightly better at 82 percent, with 128 new reviews.
How many players does it have on Steam? Over the last 30 days, nearly 893 Steam users played Lord of the Rings Online daily. At peak, 1,712 players viewed the title simultaneously. Most Middle-earth enthusiasts are likely to experience LOTRO through their own launcher. The all-time high is 3,744.
Who is the MMORPG worth it for? Lord of the Rings Online is aimed primarily at fans of Middle-earth, the story from the films, and theme park players. However, those starting with the MMORPG today should expect very weak graphics and a rather monotonous combat system. The epic story can, however, make up for it. How popular the game still is today is shown by the following report: The rush for the new worlds of the MMORPG Lord of the Rings is so great that the developers had to add more.
