MeinMMO presents the top 10 best-rated MMORPGs on Steam. Rank 9 comes from England and is an old classic in its most modern form.
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: Jagex | | Platform: PC, Mobile | Release Date: January 4, 2001 | Model: Free2Play | Steam Rating: 81 % Positive
What kind of game is it? RuneScape is one of the oldest active MMORPGs, first released in early 2001. You will experience many adventures in a fantasy world and explore ancient legends and myths while gods plot dark schemes.
You can choose whether to explore deep dungeons, fight monsters and loot treasures, or provide weapons to adventurers as a blacksmith. You can even build your own farm and live there.
RuneScape offers classic MMORPG fare, taking you on a journey back to the beginnings of the genre.
What content does it offer? In RuneScape, you can spend your time in various ways:
- You can explore dungeons with other players
- Farm equipment
- Level some of the countless life skills
- Experience PvP
The special thing about it is that the content has not been adapted for “modern games.” There is no solo content or sprawling story. Instead, exploration and group dynamics play an important role.
What do the Steam reviews say? The MMORPG was released on Steam only in October 2020 and has received 27,225 reviews since then. 81 percent of those are positive – in March, the figure was still at 82 percent. Currently, only 74 percent of the most recent reviews (123) are positive.
One reason for this could be the recent price increases for the subscription. Many new players may also be put off by the outdated technology. Meanwhile, the “Road to Restoration” is currently underway, aimed at making the MMORPG more attractive to new players – including a more modern look for the avatars.
How many players does it have on Steam? In the last 30 days, there was an average of 2,943 players online and a peak of 5,092. Since RuneScape has existed for decades outside of Steam, the total player numbers are significantly higher. The all-time high is 12,508 concurrent players.
Who is this MMORPG for? If you’re looking for a classic MMORPG with plenty of content, but also a lot of grinding, you should check out RuneScape. It’s no coincidence that the game, which has been evolving for nearly 20 years, still captivates its fanbase. However, the movement and combat systems are somewhat outdated. The graphics are also not stellar. Those who wish can play RuneScape on iOS and Android as well.
