MMORPGs thrive on having enough active players. Without them, there’s nothing happening in the world, and there’s a lack of teammates for competitive or cooperative group content. MeinMMO therefore lists the 10 online role-playing games with the most players currently on Steam.
For an MMORPG, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game to succeed, it needs a sufficiently large, healthy population on the servers. Because without this foundation of active players, nothing happens in the often vast worlds. Allies or opponents? Not a chance! The genre thrives on the daily hustle of its virtual bear. MeinMMO has compiled the MMORPGs on Steam with the most players in May 2026.
How was the list created? For the top 10, the MMORPGs that had the most active players on Steam in the last 30 days were considered. The number is calculated based on how many players were logged in at the same time on average.
The source used was Steam Charts, which provides data for the last 30 days. It is not known how many bots are among the active players. Since we do not have an accurate percentage distribution, we have counted all active players as if they were real players.
This list does not consider players who log in outside of the Steam client. The player numbers are likely to be even higher for MMORPGs that have been released on multiple platforms and/or have their own launcher. However, since developers rarely publish concrete player numbers, we are limiting ourselves to Steam as a platform.
10th place of the MMORPGs on Steam with the most players – EVE Online
Setting: SciFi | Developer: Fenris Creations (formerly CCP Games) | Platform: PC, macOS | Release Date: May 2003 | Model: Free2Play | Rating on Steam: 73 % Positive | Active Players: 4,054
How many players does it have on Steam? In the past 30 days, there have been an average of 4,054 players online. The peak during this time is 5,914 simultaneous active players. The all-time high is 10,229 simultaneous active players. Since EVE Online also has its own launcher and access via Epic Games, the full player numbers remain unknown.
EVE Online returns to the top 10 after a few months of absence because the competition is faltering. For instance, Star Wars: The Old Republic had an average of over 5,100 Steam players in July. On the other hand, EVE Online last had significantly over 4,000 simultaneous active players 6 years ago. The SciFi MMORPG is holding strong.
What kind of game is this? The space MMORPG by CCP Games has long been regarded as the most beautiful Excel sheet for players (since June 2023 even with official Excel integration). Nevertheless, EVE Online has managed to build a loyal community that remains quite large and active even after more than 20 years and has maintained a fascination that still captivates today.
Furthermore, the developers manage to regularly make headlines with their game. Through new announcements for the EVE universe at the annual EVE Fanfest, the regularly released updates, or remarkable events from the player-driven universe. Here is an example:
Since November 2016, EVE Online has had a Free2Play model, which has expanded over time. In this sandbox universe, you can find more than 7,800 star systems, where you can engage in war, politics, trade, piracy, or exploration.
Moreover, efforts have been ongoing for years to make the complex sandbox MMORPG more beginner-friendly and to modernize the technology. Most recently, an update from Python version 2.7 to Python 3.0 was on the agenda. This is a massive undertaking for the developers, but it is expected to be worth it for the community.
Finally, all game mechanics such as the economy system or damage calculations run through the brain of the MMORPG. The devs promise a significantly improved performance, security, and stability.
Who is this interesting for? Anyone looking for a huge sandbox for their adventure, where they can really delve deep and actually help shape the fate of the world alongside other players, can find happiness in EVE Online. Nowhere else are stories written that read like a great espionage novel: A player in EVE Online waited 10 months for the perfect kill, infiltrated a guild like a spy
