MMORPGs thrive on having enough active players. Without them, there’s nothing happening in the world, and there’s a lack of players for competitive or cooperative group content. MeinMMO therefore lists the 10 online role-playing games with the currently most players on Steam.
Anyone wanting to be an MMORPG, that is, a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game, needs a sufficiently large, healthy population on the servers. Because without this foundation of active players, there’s nothing going on in the often huge worlds. Companion or opponent? Not a chance! The genre thrives on the daily hustle and bustle of the virtual world. MeinMMO has listed the MMORPGs on Steam with the most players in May 2025 below.
How was the list created? For the Top 10, the MMORPGs were considered that had the most active players on Steam in the last 30 days. The number is calculated based on how many players were logged in simultaneously on average.
As a source, Steam Charts was used, which provides data for the last 30 days. It is not known how many bots are among the active players. Since we do not know the percentage distribution exactly, we treated all active players as if they were real players.
This list does not consider players who log in outside the Steam client. The player numbers are likely to be even higher for MMORPGs that have been released on multiple platforms and/or have their own launcher. However, since developers rarely publish exact player numbers, we limit ourselves solely to Steam as a platform.
Rank 10 – Throne and Liberty

How many players does it have on Steam? In the past 30 days, an average of 4,457 players were online at the same time. The peak for the current month is 12,984 active players at the same time. While the peak is indeed higher than in previous months, the average player counts are stabilizing at a comparable level.
This is likely to disappoint NCSoft, as the new expansion “Frozen Division: Nyx” has just been released.
What kind of game is this? The new MMORPG from NCSoft (Aion, Guild Wars, Lineage) was originally planned as Lineage Eternal and was supposed to adopt an isometric perspective. Due to the extremely critical feedback from testers, a years-long overhaul followed starting in 2017, and it was finally renamed to Throne and Liberty.
In its current form, T&L places an unusual emphasis on the “Massively” in “Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game” – for modern online role-playing games.

- Many contents are aimed at guilds – anyone wanting to get the most out of the MMORPG should join a community of like-minded individuals.

Moreover, the focus that T&L places on its own game world is particularly noteworthy. Thanks to animal forms and grappling hooks, you can move very mobile through the regions, and you will find quest givers and secrets everywhere. Additionally, the game world reacts dynamically to weather and environmental influences as well as the time of day.
By the way, you don’t need a Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus membership for Throne and Liberty. Furthermore, the MMORPG has been released with a Free2Play payment model in the West. So, it’s easy to just take a look.
Who is this interesting for? Anyone who is interested in an MMORPG that focuses heavily on guild and raid content with hundreds and sometimes even more than 1,000 players should definitely try Throne and Liberty.
Moving through the game world, questing, leveling up, and participating in events, while other player characters are everywhere, is a great feeling. However, the monetization with its Pay2Win elements, the high grind factor, and the somewhat elitist community make it difficult for newcomers and Free2Play players to enjoy the MMORPG.
