With a press release, the developers of ArenaNet announce a new premium DLC for Guild Wars. Afterlife is set to be released in January 2027.
What is known about the new DLC? Afterlife is set to be released for Guild Wars on January 13, 2027, for Steam, iOS, and Android. Like the previous expansions, the new content follows a Buy2Play model. You can pre-order it on Steam for about 24 Euros. The developers from ArenaNet explain in their announcement what it is about:
The expansion leads through the mists of Tyria to the land of Xotecha, where the Order of the Moonless Night seeks support in the battle against the growing threat of nightmares and the mysterious cult of Odran. At the center is the dungeon “the Unformed”, which constantly changes.
One of the main innovations of Afterlife is the dynamic dungeon. There, you will face ever-changing challenges, whether solo or in co-op, where you never know which maps, enemies, or bosses you will encounter. Through a skill draft system, you select new skills after successful battles, which are not limited to your primary or secondary class.
Through your runs, you unlock rewards that influence future dungeon runs. You can also receive loot that you can use throughout the game outside of Xotecha. Your progress in the dungeon advances the story of Afterlife. The new trailer prepares you for the DLC:
Guild Wars lives
How does the community react? A current discussion about the DLC is taking place on Reddit with over 320 upvotes and 90 comments. Many players are surprised by the announcement but are happy that Guild Wars is alive.
- Maulclaw explains on Reddit: “That GW1 is getting an expansion was not on my bingo card – what the hell?”
- InBlurFather wonders on Reddit: “Interesting, so basically something like a rogue-like mode within the actual game? I wonder if Xotecha will even be mentioned or visited in GW3, or maybe even in future content for GW2.”
- SnooGiraffes7874 celebrates on Reddit: “Day 1 – I will be there on day one. For me, Guild Wars is what Vanilla-WoW was for many others.”
The last content package of Guild Wars is called “Eye of the North” and dates back to August 2007. Afterlife thus appears nearly 20 years after the previous premium DLC. In fact, the announcement does not come out of nowhere.
