MeinMMO reveals Rank 8 of the MMORPGs on Steam with the most players. The online role-playing game in this position comes from NCSoft and has been in development for a long time.
Setting: Fantasy | Developer: NCSoft | Platform: PC, Consoles | Release Date: October 1, 2024 | Steam Rating: 67% Positive | Active Players: 4,923
How many players does it have on Steam? In the past 30 days, there have been an average of 4,923 players online simultaneously. The peak this month is at 8,254 active players at the same time. The trend shows a decline after stronger June and July.
This is likely to disappoint NCSoft, as the new expansion “The Frozen Divide: Nyx” has just recently been released.
What kind of game is it? The new MMORPG from NCSoft (Aion, Guild Wars, Lineage) was originally planned as Lineage Eternal and was to focus on an isometric perspective. Due to the enormous critical feedback from testers, there followed a years-long overhaul starting in 2017, and ultimately a renaming to Throne and Liberty.
In its current form, T&L puts an – for modern online role-playing games – unusual emphasis on the “Massively” from “Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game”.
- You can encounter more characters in the game world than one might expect from many other MMORPGs.
- Many of the contents are aimed at guilds – those who want to get the most out of the MMORPG, should join a community of like-minded players.
- Many of the group and raid challenges have a (partially optional) PvP element.
- Servers and technology are designed to bring many characters together in one region without noticeable performance drop.
Notably, the focus that T&L puts on its own game world is also special. Thanks to shape-shifting and grappling hooks, you move very swiftly through the regions, and you will find quest givers and secrets everywhere. Additionally, the game world reacts dynamically to weather and environmental influences as well as the time of day.
By the way, you do not need a Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus membership for Throne and Liberty. Moreover, the MMORPG started with a Free2Play payment model.
Who is this interesting for? Anyone looking for an MMORPG that places a strong focus on guild and raid content with hundreds and sometimes even more than 1,000 players should definitely try Throne and Liberty.
Just moving through the game world, questing, leveling up, and participating in events while other player characters are everywhere is a great feeling. However, the monetization with its pay-to-win elements, the high grind factor, and the sometimes elitist community makes it hard for newcomers and free-to-play players to enjoy the MMORPG. It also doesn’t help that Amazon Games will soon be withdrawing from western publishing.
