Which anime is it about? Chainsmoker Cat started streaming on July 2, 2026, and is available on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. It is running in the current summer season 2026 and is expected to have about twelve episodes.
Content-wise, it is about the cat girl Janiro. She lives in modern Japan but is heavily addicted to nicotine and unemployed. She lives in absolute squalor and can’t even afford new cigarettes.
In her desperation, she resorts to grotesque measures to get a hit of nicotine. In the neighborhood, there are other terrible fates as well, such as a toxic gamer cat or a heavily drug-addicted neighbor.
The viewers accompany the cat girl in her dreary everyday life, which is full of dark humor. The anime adapts the story from the manga, which has been running since February 20, 2023, and is still not finished.

Why is the anime so disgusting? Yaniko lives completely in squalor and does not hesitate to take special measures to get nicotine. For example, she still smokes discarded cigarette butts from the trash or cuts the ends off cigarettes that are stuck in dog poop.
Moreover, the protagonist’s apartment is a stinking garbage dump, and cigarette smoke is omnipresent. The concept of the series is to show a person at absolute rock bottom and not glorify smoking in any way.
Even the voice actress of the protagonist admitted that she was initially excited about her role but then questioned why she was chosen for it. Still, she can find something appealing in the anime (as read on Automaton):
The story is incredible, and you can almost smell the cigarette smoke through the screen, but I think it has a certain appeal that keeps you wanting to read more. All the characters are terrible people, but I like that they are all charming in their own way.
The audience also exhibits mixed enthusiasm for the anime. On Reddit, many users say it’s one of the best anti-smoking campaigns they’ve ever seen. However, there are also many comments filled with sarcasm, such as a user who would recommend the anime to families.
