On June 2, 2026, the Infestation Update for Fallout 76 will launch and bring new challenges. Those who confront and defeat the attacking enemies can claim powerful Legendaries. MeinMMO was able to preview the content.
With the infestations, Bethesda aims to revitalize the entire map of Fallout 76. The idea is that events will occur at different locations on the map where particularly strong enemies attack.
You can teleport directly to the action on the map with a simple click as soon as a player discovers an infestation – a bit like someone launching a nuclear bomb. At the respective locations, enemies await who are significantly stronger than what you typically encounter in the world, accompanied by a legendary boss, their leader:
- You must defeat waves of enemies until the leader of the group finally appears.
- “Normal” enemies are already tougher than regular foes in the world and can drop 3-star Legendaries.
- The boss will definitely hand you a 4-star Legendary if you defeat him.
- The update will also introduce new possible affixes into the game.
The developers promise dozens of combinations of locations where both infestations can occur and the types of enemies themselves: Super Mutants, Cultists, Scorched, PRC Ghouls, Bots… The update will be released for free for everyone on June 2 and will be tested on the test server until then.
The attacks end quickly, but “we’re working on it”
During the presentation, the developers defeated several infestations, and they completed some within two minutes, even though the challenge is supposed to be significantly greater than what players usually experience in the game.
However, they emphasized that they already have strong and perfected builds. With randomly assembled groups, it could look very different, but they are primarily observing how infestations develop during testing to adjust as necessary.
Since infestations primarily present themselves as an endgame activity focused on group play, collaboration and appropriate group builds are the goal.
As a small preview, Creative Director Jon Rush spoke about companions and that it would certainly be cool if they could accompany players in the wasteland and fight alongside them… however, that remains a pure statement for now. The feature was already a highlight at its release: Fallout 76: All companions in Wastelanders and where you can find them
