After Sony finally commented on the end of physical disc releases for their consoles, the CFO presents three more reasons why PlayStation is better than gaming PCs.
What did the CFO say? Lin Tao, the Chief Financial Officer of Sony, spoke during a recently held earnings presentation about the upcoming removal of physical discs at PlayStation.
According to Tao, physical releases were not a factor that distinguished PlayStation from PC. However, he mentions three reasons that support the console:
- Compared to high-end gaming PCs, Sony products, the consoles, are more affordable
- Sony consoles would provide a more stable gaming environment
- On Sony consoles, there are curated content
Indeed, Lin Tao also states in response to a question that physical discs are not a major distinguishing factor between console and PC for them. PCs would offer certain types of games
that are more long-term
, while the strength of PlayStation is precisely the curated content.
What has happened recently around Sony? Sony announced on July 1, 2026, to stop releasing discs for their consoles. From 2028 onwards, no games will be released on physical media. The announcement has led to massive backlash on social media for weeks and the company has faced ongoing inquiries.
Between August 23 and 30, 2026, some players are now also planning a specific boycott of the console: All PlayStations should remain off during this time.
During the recent earnings presentation, the company also stated that they are aware of the players’ feelings. Nevertheless, they want to stick to the disc phase-out.
Currently, it seems that the end of physical game releases for PlayStation consoles is firmly sealed. There are also doubts about the planned boycott from experts. Not about the basic willingness of players, but their steadfastness: Sony’s disc decision divides the community, players doubt whether a boycott will even work
