If you visit a mythical key dungeon with strangers in World of Warcraft, the experience can quickly become unpleasant. Therefore, it is all the more wonderful when the opposite happens and you have a memorable adventure.
What kind of random encounter is this? Reddit user Castlenova16 shared a heartwarming experience in the Mythic Plus area of WoW with the community just a few hours ago. Together with his buddy Miji, he ended up in a +9 run of the Windrunner Tower dungeon, where they met Gilbert.
We joined through the LFG tool, and the group leader was a mage named Gilbert. He warned us in advance that the key was originally a 10, but they hadn’t finished it in time. He also said he was bad – which was absolutely not true.
Miji and I then said: “Don’t worry, we’ll complete it on time and turn it back into a 10.” Also with us was a duo consisting of a resto druid and a warlock. I tanked as a blood DK.
During the dungeon, we were all determined to master this +9 key stone for Gilbert in time. This went so far that I blamed Miji when Gilbert died, and he returned the blame to me. Even the druid and the warlock teased each other about letting Gilbert die (even when he was standing in an area – it was never his fault!).
Every time he passed away, we shouted things like: “NO, NOT GILBERT!” or “BLIZZARD MUST NOT LET THIS HAPPEN, GILBERT DOES NOT DESERVE THIS!!” Even when I died on a pull that I had approached a bit too aggressively – as long as Gilbert was alive, the mood was great.
After we completed the key with plenty of remaining time, he thanked us for being so kind and open. The group before had said terrible things to him, so this sweetened his day a little.
I hope to meet you again, Gilbert. If this Reddit post somehow reaches you, you should know that I will always remember this run. The vibes were fantastic, and you restored my faith in the WoW community.
For Gilbert.

“I wish more people were like this”
How does the community react to the story? Since the post is still very fresh, it has only gathered just over 105 thumbs up and a few comments so far. However, they beautifully show that other players wish for such encounters as well.
- HerculesMagusanus writes on Reddit: “I wish more people were like this. It is just a video game; there is no reason for all this negativity and hostility.”
- Brehdougz adds on Reddit: “I could use more of this. When I compare myself to the 15-year-old ‘WotLK’ me that I used to be, and with the 31-year-old me of today, who now has kids, I wish I still had the same attitude towards this game as back then. It is never that serious. Well done, guys!”
- Sharkytrs hopes for Reddit: “Yeah, man! We need more posts like this. Most of the time, we only see the negative sides because emotions are like that, and people want to vent, but in my experience, M+ in Pugs has been a positive experience where people were just wild and simply had fun playing the game.”
MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz remembers: Over the past 21 years in WoW’s dungeons, I’ve had many very positive experiences, but these mostly took place in the context of Vanilla-WoW, WoW Classic, or the first expansions – in the phases where there was still no automated group search.
It’s simply a difference whether you are grouped together by an anonymous system and teleported into the instance (and then there might even be a language barrier within the group) or whether you have to arrange for a group and travel on a closed language server – and inevitably come into contact with the fellow players.
Sure, the old way is much more arduous and can’t be managed within short time windows. However, for the best possible MMO experience, it is, in my view, indispensable. All the more wonderful when such experiences also occur in modern World of Warcraft. What do you think? Feel free to share your opinion in the comments!
