In Old School RuneScape, the servers are heating up. Over 250,000 players are currently playing the MMORPG, even though the developers recently raised the prices.
Why is the MMORPG so popular right now? The MMORPG genre is currently experiencing a trend, where many players are returning to their old favorites due to a lack of new titles. Currently, we are seeing record player numbers not only in Old School RuneScape (Source: MMORPG.org.pl).
The fact that so many players are currently checking out RuneScape is likely due to the major updates that the MMORPG has received as part of its renewals. At the same time, the MMORPG was recently criticized for raising prices again, the third time in five years.
A Mix of Nostalgia and Innovations
What updates have there been recently? In Old School RuneScape, the developers have a packed roadmap for 2026. So far, there have been two major updates. In January, a new temporary game mode called Deadman Annihilation
was introduced, along with more PvP, new items, and the removal of the bank keys.
The most recent update is the April update titled: Leagues VI: Demonic Pacts, which introduces the Yamas League. In addition, Echo bosses are returning, new tasks and relics are coming, and new demonic rewards can be earned. The combat masteries have also been adjusted.
What does the community think about the new peak? The players of Old School RuneScape are very happy that their MMORPG is currently flourishing. At the same time, it is likely that everyone is aware that the high player count also means many bots are invading the title. However, they also praise the new leagues of the game on Reddit:
- janzuka: “Leagues has been a lot of fun so far. What kind of build are you all using?”
- Gavither: “It’s accessible on many available platforms and not technically demanding. It’s really no surprise. However, bots probably make up quite a percentage.”
- SuperCarpenter4450: “Surely RS has always had a botting problem, but they have published statistics that detail how much they have ramped up bot bans, especially in the last 6 months. Every active player can tell you that you can feel the reduction of bots. So it’s still pretty impressive to see their player numbers. However, the reason for this peak is a leagues event, which historically drives player numbers up.”
So they are presumably working on the bot problem, and the player count has also risen with computer gamers.
RuneScape is said to become the second-largest MMORPG brand in the world, according to the CEO. What this means and how he wants to achieve it has been revealed in the interview: The new head of a popular MMORPG wants to forgo money, saying: This will save the future
