World of Warcraft continues to be the best MMORPG on the market even in 2026. One reason for this: the future, which WoW fans can look at with some optimism.
Currently, many MMORPGs face an uncertain future. In various online role-playing games from recent years, player numbers have noticeably dropped since launch. For New World, this has already resulted in harsh consequences: In early 2027, the servers will shut down forever. How long Throne and Liberty or Lost Ark can continue in the west remains unclear.
The future for Elder Scrolls Online is also uncertain. The team recently had to cope with massive layoffs. The roadmap for the time after Season 1 is already under review. After that, a major Skyrim season, fresh experiments, and further class and weapon overhauls were supposed to follow.
Meanwhile, WoW is doing really well, even after 21 years. There are indications that Blizzard has been able to welcome more active players than during the official peak from the era of Wrath of the Lich King, thanks to the various versions of World of Warcraft and the comeback of the Chinese community in recent years – back then, the developers celebrated over 12 million subscribers.
With such success, it is clear that Blizzard continues to happily feed its cash cow. The latest expansion, Midnight, launched in March. “The Last Titan” is said to conclude the world-soul saga. After that, further addons are expected.
An even more exciting future could lie ahead for WoW Classic. If alleged leaks are to be believed, Blizzard is currently preparing to announce a proper Classic-Plus variant – fulfilling a major wish from the community once again.
