World of Warcraft is also the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: None of the competitors has what it takes for the genre crown.
Despite all the strengths mentioned so far, it is not the case that WoW has been invulnerable over the past 21 years. The old dominance has faded. Weak expansions like Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands, along with some difficult story or design decisions, have lost many fans.
Moreover, there is the simple fact that we have been making World of Warcraft unsafe for over 2 decades. This creates a strong emotional bond with the world and characters. In Azeroth, many longtime players feel at home.
Summary with all the reasons why WoW is still the best MMORPG in 2026:

But to be honest: Who wouldn’t like a new wallpaper? A new, ambitious theme park MMORPG from the West? The problem: In the last 12 years, there has only been one game that fits this category and has celebrated a final release: New World.
Other than that, there have mainly been smaller MMORPGs for a specific niche that cannot hold a candle to WoW in any area, and the global versions of Asian online role-playing games, which have always clashed with their peculiarities in the West – and therefore only address a rather small target audience.
There has been a lack of new challengers for years. Only among the other established MMORPGs are there a few games that have been able to achieve success at eye level alongside WoW in the meantime. Final Fantasy XIV stands out the most, having improved over the years through its relaunch with A Realm Reborn and the subsequent expansions.

The highlight of Square’s MMORPG during the expansions Shadowbringers and Endwalker was also a few years ago. At that time, Yoshi-P’s team was able to bring the decade-long story arc of Hydaelyn and Zodiark to a spectacular conclusion. A masterpiece. Unfortunately, the current expansion Dawntrail has left a lasting sour mood in Eorzea.
Another very successful theme park MMORPG from the West, The Elder Scrolls Online, is currently even fighting for survival. The outcome is unclear. The many layoffs at Zenimax are likely to have a negative impact on the planned content for the future, even in the best-case scenario.
While we see exciting new challengers like Guild Wars 3 or Riot’s LoL MMORPG on the horizon, it will still take time until release – and whether they all cross the finish line in the end is always a concern in the online role-playing game genre…
In summary, World of Warcraft is undoubtedly still the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. How do you rate this? Do you see a competitor that we are undervaluing?
