World of Warcraft is still the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: the regularly released updates and expansions even after all these years.
For 21 years, Blizzard has consistently expanded World of Warcraft with new updates and major expansions. 12 of these add-ons have been released so far. With “The Last Titan,” the next chapter is already set. This results in an incredible amount of content waiting for newcomers and returnees in Azeroth.
WoW certainly benefited immensely from the success of its early years. While many other MMORPGs had to settle for less and establish a throttled content pipeline after just a few years, Blizzard had the funds to fire on all cylinders for two decades.
Despite these conditions, WoW fans occasionally had to endure long periods of content drought. Long-time players may still remember the painful wait for Cataclysm or the notorious content patch 6.1 from Warlords of Draenor, which brought highlights like the selfie camera, Twitter integration, and new blood elf models to the servers.
Today, that is different. On one hand, because with the many versions of WoW, something is always happening somewhere. On the other hand, Blizzard has also increased the update tempo for the current expansion Midnight – sometimes at the expense of polish and quality.
