World of Warcraft is still the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: There is no other online role-playing game where the tab-targeting battles feel so smooth.
Nowadays, there are hardly any ambitious MMORPGs that rely on the old-school tab-targeting system, which was the standard in the first 10 years of 3D MMORPGs. Instead, modern representatives entice with action-packed brawls, where you must actively dodge, block, and string together spectacular combos.
Which variant one prefers is certainly a matter of taste. In group situations from dungeons and raids, the author of these lines, for example, prefers the tab-targeting variant, as it gives the most control when healing, tanking, and playing mechanics. However, when grinding through hordes of monsters, nothing beats the powerful attacks from Black Desert.
If you tend to be fans of tab-targeting, you certainly agree with us that WoW still plays exceptionally well after 21 years. Every input feels responsive and direct. Even in hectic, chaotic situations, you always have control over your character. And all classes and specializations are designed so deeply that they offer experienced veterans plenty of potential for min-maxing.
At the same time, there are variants and aids for inexperienced players or WoW fans who want to achieve okay numbers without much effort. Sure, the balance is not always optimal. But which other MMORPG does it better over 21 years?
