World of Warcraft remains the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: The world of Warcraft, with its characters, races, and factions, has always formed a strong foundation.
WoW benefited greatly from the strong Warcraft universe and the foundation built primarily by the three real-time strategy games back in 2005. The conflict between Horde and Alliance, the many well-known fantasy races, iconic characters like Jaina, Thrall, and Arthas … it was simply a strong starting point for a theme park MMORPG.
For years, Blizzard has supported the WoW lore with some of the best cinematic trailers in video game history:
Looking back, we are even somewhat surprised at how little Blizzard has done outside of World of Warcraft and the numerous novels from the universe. Only one movie, no series, hardly any other games. And the Warcraft games that came after 2005 (like Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, or Warcraft Rumble) were services that added little to nothing to the universe.
Everything continues to focus on WoW. Those who love the Warcraft universe can’t help but regularly check into the online RPG and at least play the current story. The ongoing World Soul saga will keep us busy for several more years.
