World of Warcraft remains the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: the various WoW variants that appeal to different types of players.
For many years, Blizzard convinced its fans that the highly requested Classic version of WoW was a bad idea. Who would want to play such a dated and uncomfortable MMORPG these days? Only through the ongoing pressure from the community did the developers dare to make the attempt … and were completely blown away by the enormous success of WoW Classic.
In hindsight, it must be said that WoW Classic was the best thing that happened to World of Warcraft in the past 10 years. Through the nostalgic Vanilla experience, Blizzard was able to reverse the negative trend during Battle for Azeroth and lay the foundation for the current, still very successful WoW.
An important pillar of the success are the various Classic variants that Blizzard has gradually introduced. In addition to the first Classic version, you can currently play Mists of Pandaria Classic and the anniversary edition “WoW Classic Fresh”, which is currently in its first expansion, Burning Crusade. There are also the hardcore variants. In the past, there were also limited-time seasons with their own rules.
