World of Warcraft is still the best MMORPG on the market in 2026. One reason for this: the timeless art style of WoW, which can be relatively easily modernized.
Back then, in 2005, there were players who quit WoW or never even tried it because they found the graphics too colorful and bad. However, this stylized graphic style with its thick shoulder pads and comic-like look is one of the main reasons why World of Warcraft is still such a huge success today.
Over 20 years ago, the technology of the Blizzard MMORPG ensured that WoW ran relatively well on older computers. An important advantage in the battle against often much more hardware-hungry competitors. For many players, World of Warcraft was also the very first online role-playing game for this reason.
The advantage from back then plays only a very small role today. Nevertheless, WoW also benefits from the chosen graphic style in 2026. On one hand, the colorful look has aged significantly better than the graphics of comparably old MMORPGs. Just take a look at how the actually 2 years younger Lord of the Rings Online appears in direct comparison today.
On the other hand, Blizzard has been able to continuously upgrade the technology used over the years quite easily. Sometimes with new fire and water effects. Sometimes through modern lighting and shadow casting. Sometimes with sharper textures or revamped models.
The modern WoW of today looks significantly better than the version from 2005 and definitely does not resemble a 21-year-old game. Anyone starting with WoW today will not be immediately put off by outdated graphics, an ugly interface, or uncomfortable controls. Many other MMORPGs over 20 years old struggle exactly with that: Many players are excited about Lord of the Rings Online, but one thing keeps them away from Middle-earth
