World of Warcraft may not have the dominance of past days anymore, but there are still more than enough reasons in 2026 to grant Blizzard’s MMORPG the crown of the genre king.
Blizzard’s World of Warcraft has held a very special role for more than 21 years in the long history of MMORPGs. The Azeroth adventure catapulted the genre into the mainstream in 2004 and 2005 with its focus on accessibility, convenience, and player guidance, shaping the entire gaming industry until today through its enormous success.
Suddenly, every publisher and developer wanted such a cash cow in their stable, bringing in millions of subscribers month after month to pay some euros. Most challengers failed miserably, which also had to do with the progressively growing shadow of the great role model.
Over time, WoW only grew bigger, rounder, and more diverse. As a new online role-playing game that starts off fresh with the usual mistakes and problems, one can only lose this duel. For many years, there was no other MMORPG in the West that was as successful and popular. The genre throne belonged to WoW.
21 years old, but still a force?!
But what does it look like more than 21 years after the launch of World of Warcraft? The industry has become different. The WoW players from back then have grown older and changed their gaming habits. While some competitors from back then no longer exist, others have established themselves as a solid presence for genre fans with a healthy community.
The many years have not passed by WoW without a trace. Blizzard had to endure weak expansions, serious scandals, and far-reaching mistakes. Few of the original developers are still around.
Nevertheless, there are still plenty of reasons in 2026 to crown World of Warcraft as the king of MMORPGs. We mention eleven of these reasons below. If you come up with more arguments for WoW as the currently best online role-playing game, feel free to drop them in the comments. The same goes if you want to present a challenger that you believe deserves the crown more. Let’s get started on the next page with reason number 1.
