What is Guild Wars 2? Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG by ArenaNet that was released in 2012 and has been constantly expanded since then. It is primarily aimed at “casual players” who enjoy exploring the world, collecting achievements, and experiencing a story as a hero.
The special thing about GW2 is the constantly maintained level. Since release, you can only reach level 80. Since 2012, the equipment level has not been increased. What you earned back then is still relevant and useful today.
What content does Guild Wars 2 offer? The MMORPG provides regular content updates in the form of the Living World and new expansions. In this way, the game receives:
- new areas
- new story chapters
- new masteries
- new content such as armor or weapon skins.
Moreover, there are many tasks in the world of Guild Wars 2:
- World Bosses
- huge world events
- Jumping Puzzles
- Success
- PvP in arenas and as server against server
With the expansions Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire and End of Dragons a new vertical progression with abilities like gliding, using jump mushrooms and mounts has been added, so that veterans still have something to do.

The developers also announced that they will bring a major update every quarter and faster new expansions. The first of the “new” expansions is called Secrets of the Obscure and was released in August 2023. It brought three new areas, new story, and a completely revamped daily system.
In August 2024, the expansion Janthir Wilds was released. Included: housing, the Warclaw mount, the weapon type spear, fresh zones and story content, as well as a 10-player raid which you can also tackle as a 50-player convergence. In 2025, Visions of Eternity followed, featuring elite specializations, the revised Skimmer, more housing content, new areas, and more.
In the future, Guild Wars 2 will continue to receive new content, but fans of the MMORPG must prepare for a break. The focus is currently on Guild Wars 3.
The cost of Guild Wars 2: The base game of GW2 is now available for free. There you can level a character to max level, explore all the areas that were in the game at release, and level all professions. You also have full access to the Fractals, an endgame content for 5 players.
- The expansions must be purchased separately. They can be bought individually, but also as a bundle. The current expansion costs, for example, 24.99 euros.

Our Conclusion on Guild Wars 2 in 2026: While most MMORPGs focus on increasing character strength through progression systems and better gear (vertical progression), Guild Wars 2 takes a different, horizontal approach: All content should be accessible to as many players as possible – and this applies to upcoming expansions and updates as well.
In GW2 it’s therefore not about the hunt for ever better gear, but about experiencing the story, exploring the game world, and collecting achievements. Since there was no monthly subscription and since 2015 even a Free2Play access was available, Guild Wars 2 has established itself as the perfect game for casual players, MMORPG enthusiasts with little time, solo players, and collectors.
Additional advantages include the great mount system, where all animals move in a wonderfully natural way and also possess unique benefits. Exploring the world becomes even more fun. Or the stylish painting watercolor graphics, which also include interface elements and the map.
Due to the current hype surrounding the announcement of Guild Wars 3, more players are once again flocking to the MMO world of Tyria.
