What is Destiny 2? Destiny 2 is an adventure shooter developed by Bungie (the creators of Halo). You play as a powerful hero known as a “Guardian,” tasked with protecting the world and our solar system from various threats. To aid you, a “Ghost” saves you from death and provides vital information.
In Destiny 2, you choose from three classes and play through the story, complete raids and strikes, or battle other Guardians in PvP. Along the way, you equip yourself with different specializations and powerful exotic items.
The base game of Destiny 2 is free-to-play and is primarily designed to introduce new players to the Destiny universe. Various editions and paid annual expansions—such as The Witch Queen or Lightfall—are intended to provide long-term entertainment for Guardians interested in deep lore and top-tier gunplay.
What content does Destiny 2 offer? Destiny 2 offers a variety of content that can be experienced both in groups and solo. As a Guardian, you can choose from three classes – Hunter, Warlock, and Titan – and a wide range of abilities.
The highlights of Destiny 2 include:

How much does Destiny 2 cost? The standard version of the Destiny 2 expansion “Year of Prophecy” costs €79.99. For the Ultimate Edition, you’ll have to pay around €100. If you only want to play “Renegades,” the investment is €39.99.

Why is it worth playing Destiny 2 in 2026? Destiny 2 faced heavy criticism during the Lightfall DLC due to high levels of content recycling and a poorly told, uninteresting story. Since then, players have seemed consistently dissatisfied with almost everything Bungie adds to or removes from the game. However, that doesn’t mean Destiny 2 deserves to be ignored, as it still offers a lot that many other games simply don’t.

With “Renegades,” Destiny 2 received a new expansion heavily inspired by Star Wars. Since late 2025, the MMO has been attempting a shift in direction through this crossover, following the failure of the previous expansion, “The Final Shape” (Am Rande des Schicksals). This mix of franchises works surprisingly well.
What are the issues with Destiny 2?
As a new player, you can easily spend countless hours in this MMO shooter. However, Bungie frequently recycles content. Quests often follow the same patterns and offer little variety. Strikes must be repeated often, making them suitable only for players who don’t mind the grind to progress.
Some mechanics, such as the fine-tuning of various activities, aren’t always fully polished. Additionally, while the onboarding process for new Guardians has improved, it is still not optimal. Many players quickly feel overwhelmed, and old story fragments don’t always make sense to them. To bridge this gap, Bungie has made past missions—like Cayde’s Last Stand from the 2018 Forsaken DLC—playable again and added background lore.
It must also be mentioned that communication between Bungie and the community isn’t always ideal—at times, it has even become extremely toxic. It doesn’t help that the Renegades expansion, despite its quality, has had little positive impact on player numbers.
