What is Pokémon GO? Pokémon GO is an “Augmented Reality” game that merges the world of Pokémon with our own. You can embark on a journey in the real world to find Pokémon, spin PokéStops, and experience adventures with friends and other trainers.
In 2016, a hype around the game emerged, which has since somewhat subsided. Nevertheless, Pokémon GO is still a popular game and is constantly being expanded. Time and again, you encounter trainers in the real world who are on the hunt for Pokémon.
We have chosen Pokémon GO as a special case. The title can be played like an MMO, as there are events where you can meet a lot of people. However, players need to live in the vicinity of an active community for this.
What content does Pokémon GO offer? In Pokémon GO, you can catch a lot of Pokémon from different generations while you are on the go. New Pokémon are constantly being added.
In addition, the game offers more than just completing your collection:
- You can battle with Pokémon in raids, arenas, or trainer battles.
- There are regularly and massively events.
- The game continuously brings variants of Pokémon, such as Alola, Galar, Hisui, Shiny, or Party versions.
- Team Rocket is waiting at PokéStops and attacking you. You can also snag a legendary Shadow Pokémon from Boss Giovanni. There are also Rocket Raids where you can face off against the Shadow Pokémon.
- The buddy feature is now very prominent.
- You can defeat bosses through remote raids with friends from other cities.
What does Pokémon GO cost? The mobile game is free to play and can be played without spending money. However, in the real-money shop, trainers can buy inventory expansions, Poké Balls, and some other useful items.
Among these items are incubators for eggs. At special events, it may be a small advantage to purchase these incubators, thus increasing the chances of finding shiny versions. Additionally, optional tickets for the events can be purchased, which also bring benefits.

Who is speaking? Our former MeinMMO author Franzi Korittke has been a true Pokémon fan since childhood. She has been actively participating in Pokémon GO since 2019. She hasn’t missed a single day of playing and has taken advantage of every event.
Why is it worth playing Pokémon GO in 2026? In Pokémon GO, you can always experience something, as the game literally hosts special events almost every week, where you can encounter various monsters.
A special highlight are the monthly Community Days, during which a specific Pokémon is highlighted and can be found more frequently in the wild. With an improved Shiny chance, there are also shiny specimens available. Additionally, there are live events that Pokémon GO can impress with.
What are the problems with Pokémon GO? Meanwhile, there has been criticism as the prices for remote raids have increased and a limit for remote raids has been added. Additionally, there are occasional bugs in the game that annoy trainers. This includes bugs, for example, when introducing new Pokémon and in the GO Battle League, which slightly tarnish the gaming experience from the perspective of many trainers.
The routes feature had problems at the beginning. Still, there are significant differences between city and rural players in many areas of the game. Events and bonuses are often designed for trainers who have many PokéStops nearby or a large local community. In this regard, city players often have the advantage.
