In Pokémon GO, the big avatar update has now been rolled out to all trainers. It brings many new customization options, but also strong criticism from the community.
What kind of update is this? Recently, Niantic announced a major graphics update with four features. This update will be released in three parts, with the first part named Rediscover yourselves anew
now making its way into the game.
While some trainers in the community celebrate the update and enjoy the new opportunities to customize their avatars, there is strong backlash against the update.
What’s included in the avatar update
What changes does the update bring? The update offers you more options for customizing your avatar than were previously possible in Pokémon GO. These include the following adjustments:
- Body shape, eye color, skin color, hairstyle, and facial expression can be personalized
- Expanded color options are available for skin tone, hair, and eyes
- Hairstyles can now be filtered by short, medium, and long styles
- The weight, muscles, shoulders, chest, and hips of your avatar can be adjusted
Additionally, the update has removed the choice of gender. Instead, you can shape your avatar just the way you like it.
Where can I find the changes? To take advantage of the new customization options, you just need to open the avatar editor. You can do this by clicking on your avatar’s face at the bottom left corner of the map. Then click on Wardrobe
and find the new options under Appearance

What does the community say about the update? While there are sporadic positive responses to the feedback in the community, the majority of the community has a very negative attitude towards the update.
The new look of the avatars is heavily criticized, and many trainers want their old avatars back. Often, alongside the criticism, comparisons can be seen of the avatars before and after the update.
Also, the fact that some Pokémon that could previously be carried by the avatars now stand beside the avatar on the ground has led to criticism.
