The creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 are returning with their next role-playing game in their own fantasy setting: Divinity. On Steam, you currently find 6 games from Larian set in this universe. In preparation for the new Divinity, two of them are particularly worthwhile.
What is Divinity? That’s not just the name of Larian’s new role-playing game, but also the name of the fantasy universe it takes place in. It began in 2002 with Divine Divinity. Since then, many other games have been released in the world of Divinity, which differ quite a bit in gameplay:
- The first two games of Divinity, Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity, resembled more action RPGs like Diablo or the old games of Baldur’s Gate
- Divinity 2: Ego Draconis was a 3D RPG in the style of The Witcher or Skyrim
- With Divinity: Dragon Commander, Larian even developed a real-time strategy game in the fantasy universe
- Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are turn-based cRPGs that are most reminiscent of Baldur’s Gate 3
With the multitude of games, it’s easy to get confused – especially if you’re only familiar with Baldur’s Gate 3. Fortunately, we already know quite a bit about the new Divinity. Therefore, we can already say which games you should play in preparation.

Divinity ties back to the “Original Sin” games
Which Divinity games are particularly worthwhile? The new Divinity is supposedly a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2, even though it has dropped the subtitle. If you want to prepare for the new game, Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are especially recommended.
The two games also resemble the new Divinity in terms of gameplay: Divinity will be a classic RPG with turn-based combat, but without having to stick to the rules of Dungeons & Dragons.
Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 are available on Steam in the “The Source Saga” bundle for €10.66. You actually pay a little less than if you were to get just part 2 for €11.24. This offer is valid until January 5, 2026.
Do I need to have played the two games to understand Divinity? No, Larian itself emphasizes that you do not need any prior knowledge for the new Divinity. Players of the predecessors may have a deeper understanding, but it is not strictly necessary to navigate the game.
