Tywin is the perfect example of a strong family head, who prioritizes the well-being of his house above all else. At the same time, the individual family members get left behind. He cares only about power, influence, and reputation. His children especially feel this.
With Jaime and Cersei, one could definitely argue about his methods. Cersei, in particular, has been begging for her father’s recognition her entire life. His cold demeanor only fueled her negative and power-hungry side.
But it hit Tyrion the hardest, of course. Tywin was such a bad father to him that it’s hard to know where to start. From birth, Tywin hated his youngest son. He blamed him for his wife’s death, who died in childbirth. And then Tyrion was also a “deformed dwarf,” a real shame for the supposedly impeccable House Lannister.
Throughout his life, Tyrion received nothing but hatred and disdain from his father. He disciplined him in cruel ways, especially regarding Tyrion’s romantic relationships. The only positive thing is that Tywin kept his son alive. However, that really doesn’t deserve applause.
