Randyll is the head of House Tarly and the father of Samwell. However, this relationship was anything but pleasant for Sam.
From an early age, Randyll rejected his eldest son because he was not “hard and warrior-like” enough. Instead of fostering his son’s extraordinary intelligence, he virtually disowned him. He could have easily sent Sam to Oldtown to train as a Maester. This would also have forced Sam to give up his inheritance, and Randyll would have been rid of his son.
Instead, he chose to torment Sam to the maximum. In the cruelest way, he tried to force the book nerd to become a hard warrior. For years, he abused him and inflicted severe physical and emotional damage on Sam.
Eventually, he sent him to the Night’s Watch under death threats, where he was to be hardened at last. That this was pretty much the last place Sam would have wanted to go was, of course, completely irrelevant to him.
Shamelessly, he replaced Sam with his younger brother Dickon, who better fit the warrior ideals.
