Cersei Lannister certainly has many faults. However, her love for her children is actually one of the few virtues that can be attributed to her. Essentially, one wants to believe her that she truly loved Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella – in her own way. Still, it must be said that she has pretty much failed as a mother.
First and foremost is of course Joffrey. She spoiled him so much that he became a selfish and cruel tyrant.
And she practically smothered Tommen with her dominance and constant thirst for power. He never learned to act independently – let alone to rule.
Driven by her jealousy and paranoia, Cersei did not even shy away from murdering Margaery. And this, despite knowing how much Tommen liked her. Ultimately, Cersei drove her own son to suicide.
No matter how obsessed Cersei was with her children: She never managed to build a good and honest relationship with them. They were more an extension of herself. Tools used in the game of thrones that ended up broken.
