Somehow, Alicent always tried to be a good mother. But it never really worked out. At least two of her sons have serious “mommy issues.” Both Aegon and Aemond felt that their mother preferred the other. Something definitely went quite wrong there. Just think of Aemond’s strange kiss.
With her sons, she seems to have moved on quite well. At least she betrays her children multiple times to Rhaenyra – fully aware that it will mean their death. Of course, especially Aemond has now become a real threat. Nevertheless, being a good mother doesn’t earn her any bonus points.
At least she wants to do everything right with Haelena now, but she completely fails here as well. She tries to force her daughter into an abortion, and she also lies to persuade Haelena to flee and leave her own daughter behind. Really very empathetic. Haelena accuses her mother of primarily thinking about her own well-being. And she is probably right.
