Games Workshop made an announcement to the Warhammer community that made MeinMMO editor and miniature fan Caro quite sad, and she thinks: Heaven help you if your compensation is not worth it!
When the latest “Miniature of the Month” announcement for September 2026 came out, I really had to sulk for a bit. That’s because Games Workshop has decided to discontinue a local offer that first got me into a Warhammer store and gave me my first Warhammer model.
I had to read with horror:
September’s Miniature of the Month also marks a big change in the monthly in-store offer. It’s the last of the traditional free miniatures you can get for stopping by your local Warhammer store.

Starting in October, there will no longer be a “Miniature of the Month,” at least not in the form we’ve known so far. And even though I’ve only been more interested in Warhammer for roughly a year – compared to hardcore fans – it still leaves me feeling a bit down.
For me, the miniature of the month was a great first motivator to step out of my comfort zone and enter the store, as well as a gracious icebreaker for conversations with other fans.

I really liked the “Miniature of the Month” program. It was recommended to me by my colleague and true Warhammer expert Benedict, who said this would be a cool opportunity for me, as a miniature fan, to check out my local store.

Besides the actual visit, I also enjoyed the monthly teasers, announcements, and just the diverse choice that changed from month to month. From the Space Marine to a dinosaur and Tyranids, there was a good mix.
Unfortunately, that’s now over, and I would be lying if I said I wouldn’t find it a shame. Yes, it’s likely just a gimmick to attract new people to the store. I don’t mind in this case; I had fun with it. I visit tabletop stores often enough and am happy when I get a free goodie on top and can chat with other fans of the hobby.
From October on there will be an alternative
In the same announcement stating that the September miniature is the last in this series, Games Workshop writes:
Don’t worry – an exciting new offer is launching in October! We’ll have news about it soon, or you can ask your local store manager for more information.

An “exciting new offer”. Okay, I’m listening.
Games Workshop has not yet officially revealed what kind of alternative offer this is. However, another Warhammer fan, Reddit user AnxietyAnkylosaurus, followed the tip in the community post and asked an employee at his local store what to expect.
According to AnxietyAnkylosaurus, he was told that it would be a miniature that one could choose from a selection of 8 to 10 variants and then build and paint it in the store like the miniature of the month.
This has not yet been officially confirmed and remains a rumor until then, but it is a rumor that makes me curious. If that is indeed the case, I could very well warm up to it and be convinced.
When it came to the Miniature of the Month, there were definitely some candidates that simply didn’t suit my personal taste, so I just ignored them. But now that we have a selection to choose from, I’m sure every Warhammer fan will be able to find at least one they like.
However, I’d find it a shame if the monthly (or general) rotation were to disappear amid the expanded selection. In that case, the 12 miniatures featured in the offer each year would be reduced.
I’m therefore approaching this offer with a touch of skepticism, though perhaps with cautious optimism. Please don’t let me down – keep giving me the models I might not otherwise have come across. I – and many other miniature fans – would be delighted.

Ever since I have become more interested in Warhammer besides miniatures for my D&D campaign, I have especially fallen in love with the Tyranids from Warhammer 40,000. However, I recently became aware of some cuties from another universe that I can hardly resist: I actually love Tyranids from Warhammer 40,000, but a completely different universe is making me doubt my loyalty
