Rare, powerful items are simply part of MMOs. But some are truly unique. Would you ever use them?
Anyone who wanders the vast worlds of MMOs has surely collected thousands of items. Many of them are junk that goes straight to the next vendor. But some items are unique. This is especially difficult with items that you can never acquire again because the quest is a one-time fulfillment or the source of the item simply no longer exists in the game.
Can you part with such items? Will you ever make that decisive click and use them?
The Elixir Phenomenon
Many gamers call it the “Elixir Phenomenon”, which dates back to the early titles of the “Final Fantasy” series. Here, the Elixir was a rare consumable item that, when used, restored not only the hero’s hit points but also their mana completely.
The problem is: Many players regarded the Elixir as so valuable that they would never use it. The thought constantly in the back of their minds was:
“Maybe there will someday be a bigger emergency when I still need it!”
Of course, that bigger emergency never occurs, and most players end their playthrough with several dozen Elixirs in their inventory that were never used.
Cortyn says: Especially in World of Warcraft, I am very stingy with items that have a limited number of charges or are unique, such as those obtained through a quest.
I’ve had the “Light of Elune” in my inventory for definitely over 12 years. This is a potion that makes the user completely immune for 10 seconds. Will I ever use this potion? Absolutely not!
The same goes for the costumes that can be farmed during the Hallow’s End event. Here, I travel for hours through the whole world just to buy a costume that can, in theory, transform me into Deathwing or Grommash 50 times for one hour each. But since there are only 50 charges, of course, I can’t use them… because there will surely be a better time.
