Level 2: Essentials for 1-Day Events & Taverns
Once you have your basics in order, including your outfit and the essentials for logistics, you can start considering the equipment for your first 1-Day Event or your first LARP Tavern.
The following points are recommendations from me and my LARP crew. Much of this depends on the weather and season. However, I definitely don’t want to withhold them from you.
Once again, we have provided you with some thoughts under each point, just click to unfold them.
Hygiene & Body Care
A whole day in the game and under pressure, possibly even exposed to the elements. You don’t need a full shower setup yet, but a few hygiene and body care basics won’t hurt.
Disinfectant
Depending on the location of your event, the toilet situation may be complex. There might only be cold water available for handwashing. Perhaps there are only truly public toilets. It’s possible that there is no soap available. My personal highlight is mobile toilets emptied once a day.
For personal comfort, I recommend packing hand sanitizer. If you want to go a step further, a surface disinfectant or disinfecting wipes is also a good idea.
Wet Wipes
With wet wipes, you can give yourself a quick wash on hot days. If you have chosen war paint or makeup, I recommend makeup remover wipes.
Tissues
Regardless of whether itโs cold season, allergies kick in, or you just need something to wipe your hands โ one or two packs of tissues donโt take up much space and are always helpful.
Lip Care
Especially in high summer, when the sun is blazing, it’s worth having lip care with sun protection factor. In winter, it can protect against the cold as well. By the way: Sunny days in winter with a closed snow cover can cause similar sunburns as hot summer days.
Sunscreen
As soon as the sun comes out, you should arm yourself with sunscreen. Personally, I prefer to use 50+, because I forget to reapply and I am a rather light skin type. Choose your sun protection factor as needed.
But: Keep the sunscreen handy. A severe sunburn after the LARP is no fun.
Anti-Tick & Mosquito Spray
If you are out and about during tick and mosquito season, I highly recommend a suitable insect repellent spray. Sure, you won’t smell like roses. But better to smell a bit stronger than to go home with 5,000 bites or even Lyme disease.
Health & Comfort
Self-Heating Insoles
Self-heating insoles are an absolute game changer on cold days. They keep your feet warm even at minus five degrees. At least for a short time.
This is important because cold, damp feet are one of the biggest fun killers at LARP. Right after inconsiderate fellow players and rule lawyers.
Blister Plasters
Having a few blister plasters on hand is always a good idea. You are on your feet all day in the same pair of shoes. Sometimes even through woods and over meadows, up and down hills. Even in the best shoes, you can get blisters.
Day Medications
Pack all the medications you need to take regularly โ if you have any. Take them even if time management gets tricky with all the fun, better set a phone alarm.
Itโs also worth packing medications for contingencies. For example, something for diarrhea, electrolytes, an antihistamine, but also plasters and disinfectant.
Technology & Gadgets
Power Bank & Phone Charging Cable
Depending on how long your day LARP lasts and how you are getting around, a power bank and corresponding charging cable for your electronics is almost always worthwhile. Especially, you should be able to charge your phone.
Mug
The basics already include water hoses or disguised bottles and cups are suggested. Itโs definitely worthwhile to have your own tankard. Possible materials include ceramics, metal, or wood.
Choose something in a volume of your choice and keep in mind that your mug also says something about your character.
Flashlight(s)
Here too: In case of a nighttime emergency, itโs always better if someone has a flashlight with them. It doesnโt have to be heavy or big. But if you can fit a little light in your bag, you can always provide yourself with light.
On page 1, you will find the basics needed for any LARP event. On the next page, however, everything needed for multi-day large cons is listed.
