In the books, Dorne generally plays a much larger role than in the series. Among the cuts was also the character Quentyn Martell.
Quentyn was the son of Doran Martell. To fulfill a secret pact between House Martell and Targaryen, Doran sent his son to Essos. There, he was to marry Daenerys and thereby seal an alliance between the two houses to jointly conquer the Iron Throne.
However, when Quentyn has survived his dangerous journey, he arrives too late. Dany is about to marry a nobleman from the Free Cities. Desperately, Quentyn resorts to a drastic measure. He breaks into the catacombs beneath the pyramid of Meereen to tame and ride one of Dany’s dragons.
That would surely have impressed the Mother of Dragons. Unfortunately, Quentyn’s plan was not very successful. He is roasted by dragon fire and dies. And the dragons are free.
Besides this generally important storyline, Quentyn’s character allows experiencing Daenerys’s reign from a different perspective. During his journey, he witnesses firsthand how much the region suffers from Dany’s rule. Showing this in the series might have made her ending more believable.
