Val is part of the Free Folk and is the sister of Manke Rayder’s wife Dalla. For the Southerners – that is, everyone south of the Wall – she is something like a princess.
When Stannis captures her after the battle at the Wall, he sees the supposed noblewoman as an important political tool. He offers Jon to make him a legitimized Stark and take Val as his wife. With this, Jon is meant to unite the North and the Wildlings under his leadership.
This offer perfectly illustrates how little Stannis – and presumably almost everyone in the Seven Kingdoms – understands the customs of the Free Folk. Beyond the Wall, there is no such thing as nobility or hereditary monarchy. Val is therefore neither a princess nor any other political figure.
Apart from that, Val becomes an important ally for Jon. She is the one who visits Tormund and negotiates a peace pact with him. Overall, she helps Jon to understand the way of life of the Free Folk and to rally them to his cause.
