Donal Noye was quite a tough guy. Originally, he worked as a blacksmith for House Baratheon. He was the one who forged Robert’s legendary war hammer.
However, during a siege, his left arm was injured. The wound became infected, which ultimately led to the amputation of his arm. He then had to leave his old position and instead joined the Night’s Watch.
Despite his injury, he was still extremely skilled in his craft and in combat. He became a valuable member of the Watch who earned a lot of respect. During the great battle at the Wall, for example, he took command after the officers fell. When the giant’s leader tried to break through the inner gate, Noye confronted him with a few men. In the epic battle, the one-armed man managed to kill the giant. However, he also died in the process.
Noye was not just a tough guy. He was also an important mentor for Jon. He was the one who constantly admonished Jon for arrogance and hubris, thus playing a significant role in his character development. In the series, all these points were divided among various characters. However, no one could truly replace Noye.
