What is known about the story of The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past? Officially, the story is described as follows:
Fourteen years after Frodo’s death, Sam, Merry and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure once again. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter Elanor has discovered a long-hidden secret and is determined to find out why the War of the Ring was nearly lost even before it had begun.
The story thus takes place after the events of The Return of the King. As Peter Jackson revealed in a short video during the announcement, it also concerns some chapters of the first book, “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
Specifically, the events from chapters 3-8 should be highlighted, as they were largely omitted in the original trilogy. There, the hobbits set out and meet among others Tom Bombadil in the Old Forest.
It could therefore be that the remaining hobbits revisit the sites of their past journey 14 years after Frodo’s death and that possible flashbacks show what happened back then and was not seen in theaters.

Who is starring in The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past? Currently, nothing is known about the film’s cast. It will be interesting to see whether the beloved actors of Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd) will return for Shadows of the Past.
They could play the aged hobbits while younger actors may be seen in flashbacks. The use of CGI is also not to be ruled out to digitally de-age the original actors.
Who is behind the film? As mentioned, Peter Jackson is the leading figure in this project. He is joined by an unexpected collaborator: the American late-night host Stephen Colbert (Late Show)
According to his own statements, he had the idea for the film because he sorely missed chapters 3-8 in the films. He suggested to Jackson to make it its own project, which was well received.
Also involved in the screenplay is Phillippa Boyens, who, together with Peter Jackson, wrote the scripts for the original trilogy. And Stephen Colbert’s son, Peter Colbert, is also a screenwriter and likely part of the project.
