In an interview, Taz Skylar, who plays Sanji in the Netflix series One Piece, talks about the hardest decision of his life. He almost didn’t choose the role of Sanji.
What other role was there? Besides the offer to play in the Netflix series of One Piece, HBO Max also wanted to give the actor a role. Skylar was supposed to play a surfer in the series Rescue: Hi-Surf (available on Instagram).
There were 3 advantages why Skylar actually wanted to choose the HBO series:
- With John Wells, Skylar could have worked with one of his favorite directors.
- In the HBO series, Skylar would have been paid better.
- He would have played a surfer in Hawaii, which sounded like a dream job for him.
Everything pointed to the fact that Skylar would have taken the role in the HBO series. But a question from his agent led him in another direction.

Why did he decide on One Piece after all? The actor called his writing agent and asked him which path he should choose, as it was probably the most difficult decision of his life.
However, he was made to rethink with just one question:
What do you think, which role will you learn more from?
For Skylar, it was clear that it would not be the role of the surfer. Therefore, in the end, he decided to participate in One Piece.
Why was it still a good decision? Originally, the role offer to Skylar was presented as a new, big, original HBO Max show that would last for many years. That sounds attractive.
Ultimately, Rescue: Hi-Surf was canceled by the U.S. network Fox after only one season. There will be no second season. The series was only moderately received by the audience. On the rating platform Rotten Tomatoes, the score stands at 50% from critics, but 74% from viewers.
That makes it easier to understand why Taz Skylar puts so much effort into his role. He has not only learned the appropriate martial arts, but also how to cook, for which Sanji is known in One Piece: Actor from One Piece shows his cooking skills, fans marvel: “He has really become Real-Life Sanji”
