As one of the four emperors and since his last upgrade for the Devil Fruit, Luffy seemed unstoppable in One Piece . However, the great villain shows just how weak Luffy is. The captain is now receiving a harsh message from a legendary pirate.
Warning: Spoilers: In the following article, we discuss events up to the latest chapter (1190) of One Piece.
How is Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates currently? The Straw Hat crew is currently facing some significant problems. Things are not going well on the island of Elbaf. The villain Imu has appeared and shows that Luffy and his friends are seemingly still not ready.
Sanji and Zoro were easily defeated by him, and Luffy also seems unable to do anything against the demonically-looking villain despite Gear 5. In chapter 1189, Imu simply speared Luffy and was close to finishing off the (hopefully) future king of the pirates for good.
But then, the legendary pirate Scopper Gaban intervenes, shaking up the balance of power in One Piece despite his advanced age.
Lecture from a true veteran
What happens in the latest chapter? Armed with an axe, Scopper Gaban blocks Imu’s strike and seems quick enough to keep up with the villain for now. However, Imu doesn’t seem to recognize him. Before the fight continues, there is a message for Luffy.
Scopper Gaban says he is disappointed in him and adds: Isn’t it embarrassing that an injured old sack has to back you up?!
Hot-headed Luffy counters, but Gaban angrily continues: Yes, you were about to croak! Pathetic! What happens when you die!
He throws Luffy away and shouts at him again: If you think you can become king of the pirates calmly, relaxed, and happily, then go home!
With his two axes, he then continues to attack Imu. For now, he seems able to keep up, and with a strong Conqueror’s Haki attack, he even wounds Imu – something Luffy couldn’t achieve.
Ultimately, however, his old body seems to be a significant disadvantage. At the end of the chapter, Gaban is seen lying on the ground with a severed arm. Although he seems to have lost, Gaban shows that the title Emperor
may not mean as much as previously thought.
Luffy is still a newbie
What does the fight mean for One Piece? Even though he lost, Scopper Gaban delivered a remarkable performance. He managed to wound Imu despite his old age. Additionally, he was weakened by a prior injury caused by Gunko. Nevertheless, he achieved more than a current Emperor, and even Imu showed him respect.
Gaban shows in this chapter that Luffy’s Gear 5 and the title Yonko (Emperor) mean nothing at all. Luffy must take his fights seriously to protect everyone. After the reveal of Gear 5 and the victory against Kaido, Luffy’s Devil Fruit upgrade seemed like an unconquerable power, but he is still apparently not ready to take on the elite of the One Piece world.
Considering how powerful Gaban’s Haki is, the key to victory lies more in that than in new abilities.
Furthermore, the status Yonko
in general is being recontextualized. For a long time, these pirates were considered the strongest, but when comparing Gaban with Big Mom, Kaido, or Luffy, there is still much more that his crew must fear. In line with this, there is also a flashback from the previous chapter.
Shanks says to the giant Loki, who wants to take on Imu, the king of the world: If it were possible to take his head, someone would have done it a long time ago.
Currently, it seems for the Straw Hats that fleeing is the only valid option, but who knows what else will happen.
What happens next will be revealed on August 23, 2026. Chapter 1191 of One Piece will be released. What do you think about this fight? Do you believe Luffy can currently defeat Imu?
